General Treatment/Advice:

  • Treat urinary tract infection and check urinalysis at the end of treatment.
    Encourage appropriate fluid intake. Daily fluid intake should be between 1.5 - 2 litres (3-4 pints)
  • Try to reduce caffeine, fizzy and alcohol drinks replacing them with alternative fluids e.g. water and fruit juice.
  • Avoid constipation. Provide a balanced nutritious diet, increasing fibre intake if necessary. Have easily accessible and private toilet facilities and allow time to answer call to stool. If constipation occurs, treat and implement a management plan.
  • Encourage cessation of smoking.
  • Review medications that affect the bladder / bowel directly or indirectly. Modify drug regimes if appropriate. Sometimes medication can be stopped, dosages reduced or the time of day the medication is taken changed.
  • Treat atrophic vaginitis.
  • Stabilise chronic diseases such as diabetes.
