What happens when pads are composted?

A series of projects have demonstrated that diapers can be composted together with biogenic waste but only after having separated out the plastic covers. Polyethylene and polypropylene do not affect the composting process, but they do not decompose to form humus. A compost must be large enough to ensure a high enough temperature to remove any possibility of infectious germs. This excludes composting at home.

Recycling Studies on unused diapers have shown that the collection and reuse of individual components is technically possible. However, due to the high costs of collecting soiled diapers as an individual fraction of waste, recycling has not been further pursued with used products. This also applies analogously to incontinence products.
